Designing a humor-first dating app that matches people through comedy
Dating apps have optimized for volume of matches, not quality of connection. Most platforms rely on superficial signals like photos, bios, or swiping speed — leading to low-quality matches, awkward conversation starters, and endless swiping fatigue.
I created Banter, a humor-driven dating platform designed to match people based on how they think and what they find funny. Instead of swiping endlessly, users answer five comedic questions per day, written by professional comedians. Banter then surfaces the Top 20 people whose answers match most closely.
The Core Idea
Laughter is one of the fastest signals of compatibility.
Users spend large amounts of time swiping without meaningful results.
Matching is driven primarily by appearance rather than personality.
Even when users match, conversations often stall immediately.
If we match people based on shared humor, they will feel immediate personality compatibility, have a natural conversation starter, and experience more engaging matches.
Humor acts as a shortcut to personality alignment.
The product model has three pillars.
Users answer 5 multiple-choice questions per day. Each answer contributes to a humor profile vector used for matching.
Example Question
Which mythical dating creature are you most frightened of?
Instead of swiping endlessly, Banter surfaces a ranked list of the 20 most compatible users based on humor similarity, interests, location, and activity level. This dramatically reduces swipe fatigue.
Because users answered the same questions, conversations begin naturally. This removes one of the biggest frictions in online dating.
